Mad River Hatchery
The riverbank near the Mad River Hatchery attracts small crowds-perhaps twenty five on warm days-and sees increased use when nearby coastal beaches are fogged in. There are some sandy spots along the riverbank for nude sunning, and swimming is also possible in the cool river. While most nudists gather on the sandbar 0.75 mile upstream from the hatchery, nudity also occurs at other sandy points along the way and at more isolated spots downstream from the hatchery. A good number of the visitors to this site are gay men.

From Arcata, take US-101 north 2 miles turn right(east) onto SR-299 for 5 miles, ttake Blue Lake exit. Drive east on Blue Lake Blvd. a few blocks,turn right on Greenwood Rd. a few blocks along turn left onto Railroad Ave. until the stop sign, then 1 block right to Hatchery Rd. Go south a few miles to the hatchery and park there. Walk upstream .75 mile to nude area.
