Hwy 71 Picnic Area between Austin and Garfield

Is This Your Business?

Long, narrow road (two-way) running down the length of the picnic area. Truckers seem to park on the south side, cars on the north. Lots of room to manuever.
Crowd: Truckers, business men, blue collar workers, repair people. This place has really picked up in activity since the closing of the rest area in Kyle a month or two ago. Makes sense - busy road, lots of truckers and commuters taking the alternate route to nearby rural areas, Houston and beyond. Not really far from San Marcos and New Braunfels which seemed to all previously congregate at the very-hopping Kyle rest area. Maybe this is the new 'hot spot'?

Neighbourhood: Semi Rural, but lots of traffic on HWY 71

From Austin (I35) go east on Ben White (which is also HWY 71, go past the airport a few miles, and just before Garfield (where an interesting little bookstore is) you'll see a nice, long, not too brightly lit Picnic Area on the right side only.
Cross street: Navarro Creek Road

  • Hours:24 hours
Best times: Hard to say, but seen some very discreet action as the blue collar guys are heading home to Bastrop and Smithville and back to wifey at late afternoon. I've also seen some interesting action and gotten a BJ from a trucker early in the AM.
  • Cruising Info/ Tips:Truckers and cruisers who would do some 'discreet' signaling and CB contact from there vehicles seems to draw good responses.
Cruisiest Spots: East and middle of rest area in cars and trucks. Not a lot of picnic table cruising that I've seen.
  • Wheelchair Accessible:No
  • Warnings:Please don't stalk the truckers! They don't like attention drawn to them, most will haul if they think that the communication is too obvious. I've seen it time and again.
Warnings: I've seen HWY Patrol and a few sheriffs drive through. Looks like there are some homeless people possibly living in vans but they seem to stay on the east end. Place is clean and nice with tons of possibilty.
