Black & Pink Penpal Matching at Northwestern, Chicago

DESCRIPTION:

*** This event is free and open to the public. *** Are you interested in becoming a pen pal to an LGBTQ-identified person in prison? Join us Wednesday, January 18th, 6:00 - 8:30p at Northwestern's Technological Institute, 2145 Sheridan Rd, Evanston, Room M166. This event is being hosted by Northwestern's Queer Pride Graduate Student Association and Black & Pink Chicago. At this event you will: 1. be oriented to penpal-ing with Black & Pink: expectations, resources, and do's and don'ts, 2. have the opportunity to read through intro letters from incarcerated members of Black & Pink and choose a pen pal, 3. hear from Eddie Willis, a formerly incarcerated member of Black & Pink: “Approximately three and a half years ago, I lived a lonely life in a cell. I'm Eddie Willis, and I'm a member of Black and Pink. We're an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and free world allies. We believe in a world without prisons. Inside members receive a newspaper every month, and are matched with pen pals whenever possible. Were it not for Black and Pink, many prisoners that identity as LGBTQ, wouldn't receive any mail or have any outlet to other LGBTQ individuals, myself included.” Snacks will be provided! Questions? Post here or email blackandpinkchicago@gmail.com ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ Black & Pink is an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and “free world” allies who support each other. Our work toward the abolition of the prison industrial complex is rooted in the experience of currently and formerly incarcerated people. We are outraged by the specific violence of the prison industrial complex against LGBTQ people, and respond through advocacy, education, direct service, and organizing.
