Fretwork’s album of Henry Purcell’s complete fantasias – which include two In Nomines – won a Gramophone Award in 2009. An ancestor of the string quartet, a consort of viols is a group of varying size in which the musicians play different sized viols, stringed instruments held between the knees, as is the modern cello. Formed in 1986, Fretwork has cause to be considered the world’s finest viol consort, based on the range of their repertory (1501-present), number of tours and recordings, longevity and unparalleled technical accomplishment. This fascinating program lays out a treasure trove of “In Nomine” settings, all stemming from Taverner’s 16th-century setting of the Benedictus (which includes the phrase “in nomine Domini” – “in the name of the Lord”) from a Mass built on the plainchant “Gloria tibi Trinitas.” So attractive was this music that it inspired 150 years of English composers to compose variants in their own style, including two by living composers, Nico Muhly and Gavin Bryars, heard this evening. Programs, artists, dates, prices and availability subject to change.
