Green Umbrella: All-Reich Walt Disney Concert Hall Tuesday, January 17, 8:00pm ARTISTS LA Phil New Music Group Jeffrey Milarsky, conductor PROGRAM Reich: Mallet Quartet Reich: Pulse (West Coast premiere, LA Phil commission) Reich: Tehillim ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE The pulse-powered music of Minimalist legend Steve Reich has become a Green Umbrella and LA Phil specialty. The celebration of his 80th year brings a premiere, along with the shimmering joy of Tehillim and the riffing phases of the Mallet Quartet for two marimbas and two vibraphones. Tehillim (Psalms, in Hebrew) marked a bit of a departure for Reich: instead of his expected steady pulse, the rhythm of the music comes directly from the Hebrew text, which also calls for extended melodies. Not only was Tehillim the first vocal piece Reich had written since his student days, but its third movement was his first slow movement since those early days as well. The final section of this extraordinary work beautifully captures the ecstatic elation of the word “Alleluia.” Programs, artists, dates, prices and availability subject to change.
