USC Thornton Symphony Walt Disney Concert Hall Sunday, January 22, 2:00pm ARTISTS USC Thornton Symphony Carl St.Clair, conductor Bernadene Blaha, piano Kevin Fitz-Gerald, piano PROGRAM Mozart: Concerto for Two Pianos, K. 365 Strauss: An Alpine Symphony, Op. 64 (c. 45 minutes) ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE In addition to one of the most famous and celebratory of all symphonies, this special program offers a rare chance to hear Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, which gives violin, cello, and piano soloists a chance to shine. Because the soloists carry the bulk of the musical material and the work has chamber-like qualities, it is often referred to as a piano trio with orchestra. The first movement is one of the longest Beethoven had written to that point (1804) and much of the development section is carried out by the solo violin and cello. The middle movement is short, slow, very expressive, and leads without pause into the final movement, a rondo with a joyful theme tinged with the character of Polish folk music. Programs, artists, dates, prices and availability subject to change.
