Yo-Yo Ma - Edgar Meyer - Chris Thile Walt Disney Concert Hall Wednesday, May 3, 8:00pm ARTISTS Yo-Yo Ma, cello Chris Thile, mandolin Edgar Meyer, bass PROGRAM Bach Trios ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE Three dazzling virtuosos (two of them MacArthur “geniuses”) pool their talents for a fresh perspective on three-part music by one of the greatest composers ever. Born (1955) in Paris and New York City-raised, cellist Yo-Yo Ma graduated from Juilliard and Harvard; he has enjoyed a prolific career as a soloist performing with orchestras around the world and as a recording artist: his 90+ albums have received 18 Grammys. Besides classical repertoire, he has recorded bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies, tangos by Astor Piazzolla, and Brazilian music. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2001, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 and the Polar Music Prize in 2012. Edgar Meyer (b. 1960) is a bassist and composer whose styles include classical, bluegrass, newgrass, and jazz. He is acclaimed for the virtuosity he achieves on an unusually difficult instrument. Meyer’s compositions include two double bass concertos, a string quintet, a double concerto for bass and cello, and a violin concerto composed for Hilary Hahn. In 2000, he won the Avery Fisher Prize, and two years later, he was named a MacArthur Fellow. Meyer's collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma and Mark O’Connor on the much admired disc Appalachia Waltz stayed on top of the U.S. pop charts for 16 weeks. On his self-titled 2006 release, Meyer performed on guitar, banjo, viola da gamba, mandolin and Dobro, in addition to his usual piano and double bass. Mandolin virtuoso, singer, and songwriter Chris Thile (b. 1981) is best known for his work in the acoustic trio Nickel Creek and the bluegrass quintet Punch Brothers. He was a 2012 MacArthur Fellow and has won four Grammys, one of them for The Goat Rodeo Sessions, which included his collaborators on this recital. Thile has long been known as an audacious improviser and a tireless collaborator whose work has incorporated bluegrass, folk, rock, jazz, and classical elements. In 2013, he took a major step when he recorded his first volume of Bach Sonatas and Partitas, and a whole new audience took notice. In addition to all this, Thile is taking over for Garrison Keillor as the host of the popular public radio show A Prairie Home Companion.
