GMHC presents the 26th Annual Latex Ball July 30, 2016 8pm-4am Terminal 5 610 West 56 Street NYC The Latex Ball Presents Viva La Glam The Latex Ball was built from ballroom traditions: love, family, respect and support. It’s important for the new generation to know that in the late 1980s, members of the ballroom scene came together to help GMHC bring HIV and AIDS awareness, as we were among communities’ hardest hit by HIV and AIDS. One of these projects became the annual House of Latex Ball. After 26 great years together, we look to bring the essence of why the Latex Ball was initially created. We reflect and celebrate the lives of those we’ve lost in the fight against HIV and AIDS. We brought together community, awareness, testing and information. Now we unleash a new era--a future without AIDS!! In New York, our elected officials have vowed to end AIDS by 2020, and we look forward to this future. As a community, we have a lot more work to do. We believe it is possible. Let’s get into formation--our future formation. In order to look to the future, we must go to the beginning. This year, we celebrate the life of one of our founders, Avis Penda’vis. It’s been 21 years since she passed away but her motherly instincts, grace and loyalty to the ballroom remains with everyone she ever came in contact with. In her honor, this year, the Latex ball is themed after her annual ball from the late 1980s ”Viva La Glam.” It’s no doubt that Avis loved glamour. We’d like to also acknowledge the houses which helped create the Latex Ball in the early years when GMHC was developing a relationship with the community: the Houses of Chanel, Penda’vis, Xtravaganza, Mizrahi, Montana, Richards, Revlon, Valentino, Exotique, and Gaultier. With time, many more houses came together and joined us. We salute the houses of New York and New Jersey for those days of uncertainty as we came together in unity.
