BOOM Concepts is pleased to present the work of Michael David Battle, including the introduction to Dear Michael, a memoir collection to be released in 2017. September Unblurred Art Opening: Sept. 2, 2016: 6 - 9 PM --- (Our) Liberation: (Our) Recipes & (Our) Secrets --- This exhibition explores survival and liberation as it connects to tools and resources available to navigate oppression and violence. Michael David Battle brings together performance, writing, food, herbs, and visual art to manifest spaces of healing that invoke spiritual ritual and ceremony of the African and indigenous diaspora. It challenges ideas around resistance and art and who has access to create, claim and reclaim spaces. "This exhibition is a celebration of the recipes and secrets we have manifested and designed for our own survival in a system that would rather see us dead." Using several mediums and modalities, (Our) Liberation: (Our) Recipes & (Our) Secrets will explore the complexities of survival. The first hour and half will be a closed space for folks of the African and indigenous diaspora. This project is invested in creating sacred spaces that give the audience space to fellowship, share, and celebrate the things they have been told to hate about themselves. Black trans folks have an average of death at 30.6 years-old; an average salary of less than $10,000 a year; and have a 1 in 12 chance of being murdered every day. We will collectively celebrate our stories, our bodies, and our survival. Together, we will celebrate the fact that we are the survivors.. all of us.
