WORLD AIDS DAY ~ 12/01/2015, San Francisco

DESCRIPTION:

Come to The Castro on World AIDS Day and INSCRIBE, or allow a student to INSCRIBE, the name of someone you love and lost to HIV/AIDS on the Rainbow Honor Walk, The Rainbow Honor Walk is a series of bronze plaques of gay and civil rights heroes that already adorn our new and widened sidewalks in The Castro. Come and add your hero's name. We will be writing in chalk. Students from Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy (HMCRA), our neighborhood elementary school, and a group of long-term HIV/AIDS survivors called Honoring Our Experience (HOE) are teaming-up for INSCRIBE, a community sponsored and supported World AIDS Day event. Leading up to INSCRIBE our 4th and 5th grade students will be learning about HIV/AIDS, the AIDS epidemic and the tremendous loss to our neighborhood. Members of HOE will come to our school to meet and help educate our students and participate in preparing for this event. The day of the event, small groups, consisting of students, HOEs and a school parent or staff member will be spaced on both sides of Castro St. Each group will have the signs that we will have made earlier and a pale of colored chalk for writing on the sidewalk. INSCRIBE is NOT a fundraiser. It is a gift from our school and a great learning opportunity for our students. It is a celebration of remembrance and honor for our neighbors and community. It is an acknowledgement of the long-term survivors that offers healing and brings attention to the struggles and challenges that we still face today. If you are not able to attend INSCRIBE and would like the name of your loved one(s) added to The Rainbow Honor Walk, please leave their name (and a bit of their story?) on this page. We will add their name(s) for you.
