Theatre Puget Sound (TPS) is proud to present the 8th Annual Gregory Awards at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 7:30pm. The Gregory Awards celebrate theatre arts in our region, honor the outstanding achievements of our theatre practitioners, and raise the visibility of the local theatre scene as a whole. Veteran Seattle actors Bhama Roget and Kate Jaeger return as co-hosts, Seattle-based Michael Owcharuk will lead the band, and Sara Porkalob joins us as special guest artist. They will bring together the performances as we award each recipient during the ceremony. There will be more than 80 nominees across 18 categories in performance, design, and more, as well as the People’s Choice Awards, Melissa Hines Award recipient, and the Gregory A. Falls Sustained Achievement recipient. The Gregory Awards began with a single category, the Gregory A. Falls Sustained Achievement Award, in 1998. Since then, it has grown to encompass 18 categories, incorporating musical theatre and new play categories. Falls, who founded theatres wherever he went–he started Ohio’s Mad Anthony Players and ran the University of Vermont’s drama program and Champlain Shakespeare Festival before coming to Seattle in 1961–decided to create ACT Theatre in 1965. He wanted ACT to produce plays that then were revitalizing the American theater. And he didn’t stop there. He was instrumental in helping other theaters get their start, including the Empty Space and Intiman. “He was a gentle gentleman, a gifted theatre man and a theatre teacher,” said the late Peter Donnelly, former president of the Corporate Council of the Arts. The Gregory Awards are a set of honors dedicated to theatre in Washington State. Administered, funded and produced by Theatre Puget Sound, the Gregory Awards come together to celebrate the theatre arts in our region, honor the outstanding achievements of our theatre practitioners, and to raise the visibility of the local theatre scene to the general public.
