The Carnevale of Venice we revived in 1979 after being banned by that killjoy Mussolini – and has been going strong ever since. It seems to be based on the premise that people just get up to more naughty fun when they put on a mask. Just being in the city at this time is an experience – taking in the buzz of the costumes and revelry. But to really get the most out of it, book tickets to one of the many balls, tours and other events that happen in the city and get all dressed up. There are lots of websites selling tickets and costumes.
