Hillwood Museum and Gardens, a Georgian-style mansion, was purchased by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the post cereals hairess, in 1955 to house her collection of 18th centurty French and Imperial Russian decorative arts. The main house at Hillwood contains a grand entrance, large libraries and a pavillion in which guests used to dance or watch movies. The house is surrounded by formal and informal gardens filled with azaleas and other plants and flowers. For the owner and visitors, the estate was a site where they could enjoy sophisticated urban pleasures within a peaceful and inviting setting. Today Hillwod Museum and Gardens continues the tradition started by Mrs. Post at a location that is just a few miles northeast of Dupont Circle and other museums and government attractions. It is a true oasis in the middle of the city. Hillwood is GLBT friendly hosting a special Gay Day five years running.
