The Beehive House is one of the two official residences of Brigham Young, a president of the Mormon church and Governor of Utah. The Beehive House gets its name from the Beehive sculpture atop the house. It was constructed in 1854, two years before the Lion House, his other residence. The house was constructed of adobe and sandstone. Brigham Young was a polygamist, and the Beehive House was designed to accommodate him and his wives and his children by them. Since Joseph Smith's polygamy was kept secret and he did not live with his extra wives (except those which were already living with him as his live-in servants or foster daughters), the Beehive House was America's first polygamist compound. As Young's polygamist family grew, the Lion House was built to accommodate up to 12 more wives and their children, and became his official residence after its construction. Admission is Free and Complementary guided tours begin every 10 minutes. Open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
