Gay London: Soho, Vauxhall, Cruising and Pride

Gay London centres on Soho, where Old Compton Street is the recognisable hub, with more bars and clubs in Vauxhall, East London and Clapham. It has cruise clubs, saunas and two outdoor cruising areas, Hampstead Heath and Clapham Common. Pride in London's 2026 parade was on Saturday 4 July, and the Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights.

The gay scene in London

London's gay scene is centred on Soho, with more bars, a club and a heritage pub in Vauxhall, and further venues across East and South London.

Old Compton Street has been the recognisable hub of the scene for no more than a couple of decades. Soho has been home to more than 130 years of uninterrupted alternative lifestyles, from the late Victorian era to the present, and gay people gathered there by the 1930s. Gay bars and eateries grew quickly in the early 1990s, and Soho Pride began in 1994.

On Old Compton Street, Comptons of Soho (number 51-53) opens noon to 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, noon to midnight on Friday, 11am to midnight on Saturday and noon to 10.30pm on Sunday. Admiral Duncan (number 54) opens 1pm to 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10.30pm on Sunday.

Heaven, a club under the arches on Villiers Street, runs Popcorn on Monday from 10pm to 4am and G-A-Y on Thursday and Friday from 10pm to 4am and on Saturday from 9.30pm to 5am.

The Royal Vauxhall Tavern was built between 1860 and 1862 on the site of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. It has a long record of hosting alternative, transgender and drag performances, and on 9 September 2015 it received Grade II protection, the first of its kind for an LGB&T venue.

Gay's The Word, the bookshop at 66 Marchmont Street near Russell Square, opens 11am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 1pm to 6pm on Sunday.

When to go to London

Pride in London's 2026 parade was on Saturday 4 July. It started at 12pm at Hyde Park Corner, went down Piccadilly and along Haymarket, and finished on Whitehall.

It was free to attend and about 1.8 million people were expected. There were six stages, with the main stage in Trafalgar Square and a trans and non-binary stage in Soho Square.

For weather, the Met Office's 1991-2020 averages for Greenwich give a July maximum of 23.75 °C and a January maximum of 8.47 °C, with 562.86 mm of rain a year.

Gay neighbourhoods in London

London's gay venues are in Soho, Vauxhall and East London, with more in Clapham to the south.

In Soho, The Yard (57 Rupert St) opens 3pm to 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, 2pm to midnight on Friday, 1pm to midnight on Saturday and 2pm to 10.30pm on Sunday. The Duke of Wellington (77 Wardour Street) opens noon to midnight Monday to Saturday and noon to 11.30pm on Sunday. The Kings Arms is at 23 Poland Street. Prowler, the shop at 5-7 Brewer St, opens 11am to 9.30pm Monday to Wednesday, 11am to 10pm Thursday to Saturday and 12.30pm to 8pm on Sunday. Sweatbox, a sauna and gym at 1-2 Ramilies Street, is open 24 hours daily.

In Vauxhall, Eagle London (349 Kennington Lane) opens 8pm to 2am on Thursday, 9pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday and 8pm to 3am on Sunday. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is at 372 Kennington Lane. Fire is a club at 39 Parry St, and Union is a bar at 66 Albert Embankment.

East London has Dalston Superstore (117 Kingsland High St), open 4pm to 2.30am on Wednesday and Thursday, 4pm to 4am on Friday, noon to 4am on Saturday and 10am to 1am on Sunday. Also in the east are The Queen Adelaide on Hackney Road, The Divine on Stoke Newington Road, and The White Swan in Limehouse, open Tuesday 5pm to 2am, Thursday 8pm to 2am and Friday and Saturday 8pm to 3.30am.

South of the river, The Two Brewers at 114 Clapham High St opens 5pm to 2am Monday to Thursday, 5pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday and 4pm to 2am on Sunday.

Law and safety for gay visitors

Same-sex couples have been able to marry in England and Wales since Saturday 29 March 2014, and crimes committed because of someone's sexual orientation are treated as hate crimes.

GOV.UK says hate crimes should be reported to the police. Call 999 for a crime in progress or if someone is in immediate danger. For anything that is not an emergency, call 101 or use police.uk, or report online through report-it.org.uk.

If you cruise outdoors, two offences matter. The Crown Prosecution Service describes exposure under section 66 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 as intentionally exposing the genitals intending that someone will see them and be caused alarm, distress or humiliation, or doing so for sexual gratification while reckless as to that. Outraging public decency covers any lewd, obscene or disgusting act in public that outrages public decency. The CPS says a consenting couple in a secluded area who are accidentally witnessed by another person fall outside the exposure offence.

Getting around London at night

The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights only, on the Victoria, Jubilee, Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines, from around midnight to 5.30am.

Victoria, Jubilee and Piccadilly trains run every 10 minutes. The Central line runs every 10 minutes on the core and every 20 on outer branches, and the Northern line every 8 minutes on the core and every 15 on outer branches. The London Overground Windrush line runs every 15 minutes between Highbury & Islington and New Cross Gate.

Some sections do not run at night, including the Northern line Bank and Mill Hill East branches and Acton Town to Uxbridge on the Piccadilly line. Off-peak fares apply with no extra charge. Cash is not accepted, so use contactless, Oyster or a Travelcard. Planned engineering works or disruption can change services.

Cruising in London

Hampstead Heath in North London and Clapham Common are London's outdoor cruising areas, and the city also has cruise clubs and saunas with set hours.

Hampstead Heath is a long-established cruising spot for gay men. In February 2025 anonymous posters appeared there telling gay cruisers to use a hook-up app instead. The City of London Corporation, which manages the Heath, said the posters were not authorised and that fly-posting would be removed during regular patrols; the signs came down within 24 hours. Clapham Common is a gay cruising area.

Some London grounds are history: St James's Park was one of a number of cruising grounds in the Georgian era, and Moorfields, whose path was known as the Sodomites' Walk, was another.

Indoors, the cruise clubs are Vault 139 (139-143 Whitfield St, 1pm to 1am daily), TROUGH London (13-16 Allhallows Ln, 10.30pm to 4am), Underground Club London (37 Wharfdale Road, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and Bunker, also called MA1: The Bunker, at 217-221 City Road.

For saunas, Pleasuredrome (Arch 124 Cornwall Road) is open 24 hours daily. Covent Garden Health Spa (29 Endell Street) opens noon to 11.30pm Monday to Friday, noon to 2am on Saturday and noon to 10.30pm on Sunday. Sailors (574 Commercial Road) opens noon to 10pm daily, The Locker Room (8 Cleaver St, Kennington) 11am to midnight daily, and Portsea (2 Portsea Place) 11.30am to 10.30pm daily.
